Working as a Cook

A chef / cook prepares and cooks a wide range of foods for consumption, including soups, salads, starters and desserts. Chef can work in the kitchen of a large restaurant, such as a restaurant, or a hotel in Los Angeles or within schools, hospitals, nursing homes and in kitchens within large workplaces to feed the staff.

The responsibilities of a chef vary according to the type of service offered, the size of the restaurant / hotel / organisation and the number of employees. However, when handling foodstuffs they must always observe the applicable hygiene regulations. For example, store food and ingredients at the right temperature to prevent bacterial growth.  All cooks will also need to use a range of kitchen appliances such as a hob, oven and other cooking utensils, as well as a variety of other equipment including knives.

The most common type of cook, a restaurant chef, is also sometimes called an assistant or line cook, and they work in an assigned station and are usually equipped with a stove, oven, hotplate and a range of other appliances. Large restaurants and gastronomic establishments often have several menus in one large kitchen so there can be quite a lot going on!
